Steps

  1. Set the loaf on a board

Lay the bread on its side on a cutting board. A damp towel underneath stops the board from sliding around.

Tip: a wobbly board makes wobbly slices

  2. Make a claw with your other hand

Curl your fingertips under and rest them on top of the loaf. Your knuckles guide the knife and your fingertips stay out of the way.

    Tip: fingertips tucked in!

  3. Saw gently, back and forth

Use a long knife with a wavy edge. Let the teeth do the work with long, light strokes. Don’t push down.

    Tip: slow strokes squash less

  4. Stack your slices

Three cut slices standing next to the rest of the loaf

Lay each slice down as you go. Turn the loaf cut-side down on the board so it stays fresh.

    Tip: about one finger thick
